My 10 year old son wants to go hunting this year and shoot one he says. He's smaller than my oldest son when he started.
Anybody have any ideas on gun a should get him. He's about 65lbs.

At that weight I wouldn't go over a 20ga in a shotgun. You can find used single barrels fairly cheap but even a 20ga with slugs has some slap.

I started my boys on deer with my 22 Mag and would do the same again. More range, better accuracy, and no recoil. My oldest boy was six years old when he killed his first deer and I doubt he could have done it with anything other than the 22mag. Highly recommend it. :)

I cut my teeth on a 410 when it came to my first deer rifle :). I say rifle because a 410 slug is as accurate damn near as a rifle. I would recommend an over and under that way you can have a small game shotgun , nice begginer deer gun and a 22 mag all together. Unfortunately my brother scarfed it up and won't give it up although it should be mine ::)

.410 not legal for deer in maryland. might want to check your state regs.

Generally Rifle states allow 410's . In WV they were legal, I also think they are legal in NC. Md just doesn't want someone in a slug only county shooting a slug that is so close to a rifle :). wooseys :-X 410 slugs actually group very well

my dad has a bolt action .410 with a clip. its an old sear & roebuck. i love shooting that little gun and totally agree about your maryland statement. absolutly no reason you cant use a .410 for deer. just like theres no reason i shouldnt be able to use my 10mm handgun. rick are we ran by communist? ???

the 22mag is a good deer rifle out to 100yds and makes a fine squirrel/crow rifle later. Don't go with the cheap Marlin bolt though as the triggers on them are crap. Mine's a Winchester 9422m and is a far superior rifle but kinda pricey as well.

I think centerfires of any caliber are too much for a youngster.

A 410 is ok but just not nearly as accurate nor does it have the range. My boys and I love shooting the 22mag even now. It's a very accurate round.

There is a 'method' to shooting deer with a .22. I'll post more about it when I have more time.

1YLAB - I'd suggest a .243 or .260 in CF.
An autoloader in 20-ga might not be too bad. I just might see how my new 20-ga Beretta 390 smoothbore shoots rifled slugs. Comparatively, it's a soft shooting gun.

If shotguns are the only legal firearm to hunt deer with in your state I woud use a 20 ga with slugs, most staes concider a 410 not large enough. If you can use a rifle a 223 Rem with 60 grian partitions will kill deer all day long but be sure to have him practice so that he can make good shot placement. If he can handle the recoil I would go with a 243 Win with 100 grain Partitions.
