Can't go wrong with the Savage. You can shoot BP or smokeless where it is legal. With smokeless,I shoot a 250gr.-SST at 2650fps.Right on at 200,1-1/2'' high at 100,3'' low at 300.Wiyh a high shoulder shot, they never take another step.No mess to clean-up,safer than BP and you have more bullet powder combinations to choose from.IMO its a no brainer

i personally like the smoke when i shoot a ml , isnt that all part of it? if i had my way (enough money) i would be moving backwards in this part of my hunting. i'd prefer to go old fashioned when it comes to "traditional " weapons. damn kids these days dont appreciate anything lol i still use the triple f powder .

i got a remington stainless bolt with camo stock and a 3-9 simmons , shoot 2 - 50 grain pyrodex pellets, 303 g remington sabots and 209 shotgun primer. deadly on, out to 150 yards. the remington is a pain in the butt to clean though.
also have a CVA nickel barrel with black stock, with fixed 4 power, which was my dads.
this year though, i am thinking of getting a flintlock, think it would be fun to mess around with and whack a couple deer with it.

Never have shot an inline. I guess I am old fashion...I doubt I will ever own one. I like my old Traditions side hammer lock percussion cap muzzleloader. I don't even use a scope...that is how old fashion I am. I believe is having a challenge when it comes to muzzleloader hunting. Our forefathers didn't have inlines or scopes when they hunted with a muzzleloader.

Wow. Action on the Muzzleloader forum! I like it!
auchumpkeecreek - That Omega has gotten alot of good press. I think T/C did it right. If I didn't already own an Encore I'd probably have an Omega.
WVHunter - I'd agree that there's more satisfaction in taking a deer with a traditional/primitive gun, but I'd stop short of requiring that all muzzleloaders have to legally conform with the pre-1840 technology mandate that the staunch traditionalists demand. I think muzzleloading can be all things to all people if there is tolerance across the community. For example, I hunt with a in-line muzzleloading pistol that has a practical range of about 40-50 yds on deer in my hands. Now I'd wager that any traditional hunter worth their salt would claim a longer effective range with their flinter than that... probably more like 75-80 yards.
The two ML kills that stand out most in my mind are the one kill I have with the Trad Hawkin cap-lock, and the other is the kill with the pistol. They certainly both up the ante far beyond hunting with the Encore ML.

first muzzleloader i ever shot was one my brother put together with one of those kits. it was one of the flintlock type with the powder . it shot balls with patches and wasnt very accurate. the balls would get stuck in it very easy if you didnt clean it often. i know he still has it he doesnt throw nothing away. it had a delay in it like no other, sorta like lag on the computer. pop ........hmmm ...........bang. it was very cool though, just not very accurate.

Rick - A buddy of mine shoots a rock-lock, and he bats about 50% on ignition. The gun is pretty accurate though when it does go off, and you can get the lock-time pretty fast if you work at it. The trick is to get just the right thickness of patch with the ball. The largest ball and thinnest patch that you can get down the barrel seems to be the ticket, but there are exceptions. I use a pre-punched & lubed wad between patch and ball on the Hawkin, and it will put 3 shots into 1.5" at 50 yds if the light is good.
