Well I got skunked on that day as far as not seeing any deer. But that's the way it goes on public land sometimes. I had some people come by me around 9:30am making enough noise to wake the dead so I gave'em one of these and moved on. That sucked because I have hunted that spot before and have seen deer moving in and out. I am gonna get us some points ( I hope)........I ain't giving up as I had a great time. It was nice being back in the woods again.

Sounds good! I've been playing around on public land since I'm on a buck, but I really should go zap a couple of more does. Maybe I'll save the doe-zapping for late ML, and late bow season January.

I just took a small antlerless buck (looked like he already dropped his antlers) in the last 20 minutes of late ML season with the Encore. Thought it was a doe. I'll post a pic when i get a chance to take one.

congrats on smokin one with the Encore. I bet that was fun. ;D Too bad about the antlerless buck but I'm sure in Mont Co, there's plenty to spare.

Thanks guys. Still gotta take a pic - might be a day or two, the schedule is pretty full. That has gotta be the longest drag I've ever done. about 2500 yards I figure, and much of it up-hill through blow-downs. NC - you've seen the place - I shot it at the "Beauty Spot" in Monocacy. I had a buddy with me (hoping he'd get his first deer) but the odds favored me. He helped me with the drag. The blow-downs were bad & we got boxed in a couple of times on the steep hillside dragging out in the dark. Hurricane Isabel really screwed that place up. I'll give him half the deer.

OK. Here's the pic of the buck. He's soaking wet (rained all day & he was under my deck). Kinda scrawny looking - maybe 70lb. He might be a big button. There were little cavities where his antlers should have been, making me think he actually dropped small antlers. Do button bucks drop their buttons late in the season? I guess he could be a late-birth deer and small for his second year. A little hard to tell. His face wasn't real short like most button bucks. We cut him up last night, and he seemed to have had more meat on him than the normal button does. Thoughts? That should bring my 'butcher's bill' to 3 does and one buck. The 'proof' he's a buck

looks like he's a button that has shed his pedicels. Yes they knock them off. I've had em pop off in my hand late season. Yearling bucks grow faster than yearling does. That's why they are often mistaken for grown does late season. btw, you do know button bucks don't count for any points in the contest don't you? antlerless has to be a doe to count.

I wondered if they shed them. Interesting. He's probably a big button then, but he was hitting corn (found in his stomach) so he was well fed. Here are the team scoring rules from the rules post... ----------------- Team Rules 1)All teams will be randomly picked.TEAMS WILL BE COMPOSED OF 3 PLAYERS 2) does will count as 10 points with a limit of 5 does per man. 3) Bucks will score 25 points +spread+number of points 2 bucks per person may be entered. a 3 point bonus will be given for 10 points and above consecutively, 4 for 11 points and so on. 4) any deer taken with traditional archery equipment gets a 3 point bonus per deer, compound bows receive a 2 point bonus per deer. 5)Any ties will be broken again by a member poll. 6) teams can enter a buck and replace it with a better one at any time during the contest. but only 2 deer per man may be entered. ----------------- I don't see anything about a button buck not counting. I thought any buck counted as a buck, but it's ok with me if it doesn't. Is this rule written somewhere else? Maybe we should take a poll? The main objective of the hunt was to get some deer meat in my buddy's freezer, not to score points. I was hoping he would get a shot on Monday since he's never killed a deer, but the dice fell my way.

when is a buck not a buck??
answer: when it is tagged as an "antlerless" deer. without being actually tagged as a buck it doesnt count for anything, just a nice job on the kill.
dont feel badly, i took 2 of them earlier in the year with a bow as part of my personal public land culling program. since they werent tagged as bucks they are zero points. i should have actually put that in the rules once i got mine but didnt.sorry Rick
as a sidenote no poll is needed here , i have already made the decision not to score buttons much earlier when someone shot one or was that 2 of them. sorry for the confusion.

Good enough. A word to the wise in the rules would help clarify.

Rick and I discussed the intent to preserve the buck pool in the beginning but I guess the intent wasn't clarified in the rules.
What actually happened was exactly what we didn't want when DH repeatedly shot button bucks. We went over this then but it got overshadowed quickly by the turn of events.
Next season we'll have the intent included with the rules.

"Rick and I discussed the intent to preserve the buck pool in the beginning but I guess the intent wasn't clarified in the rules" I had assumed i guess that everyone in the contest understood the intent of the contest...i really didnt think i had to explain it to the caliber of hunters i think we have here. i believe everyone here has their own set of standards in which they would pull the release or trigger on a deer, a buck in particular. i think everyone here knows where i stand on the fact of shooting immature bucks, i would rather eat tag soup than shoot even a 110 inch 8 pointer.fact is these are the exact bucks that we as hunters need to let walk.i saw a decent 9 pointer that i had been letting grow for several years get the hammer first day of rifle season. since i hunt public that is the chance i take. i do not regret letting it walk though, i wouldnt have mounted it anyway. i also dont expect everyone else to abide by those standards, though i would hope that they would . i really didnt want to get into antler restrictions for something that should be a fun contest. from the rules: I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO MAKE ANY DECISIONS NEEDED TO KEEP THE CONTEST FAIR . MY DECISION WILL BE FINAL. LETS ALL KEEP IT SAFE AND GOOD LUCK TO ALL. early on i thought that everyone knew that a button or antlerless tagged deer was a big fat zero. i guess next year it will be explained better. next year i guess i could base everything on spread and points, that way no antlers no points.
