4:58 mile - thats smoking in my eyes! anything under 6 is impressive to me. That was fast enough to win the county meet by a half lap, but I got my ass handed to me in the district meet. I think the 3 guys that made it through district and into the state track meet were running under 4:45. Certainly 4:58 is fast, and I would love to be able to do that again, but I was just saying it wasn't fast by track meet standards. Aaaaah yes, the glory days! In my eyes its better for your body to be able to run longer distances (3-5 miles) at a steady quick pace than say a 4:58 mile. Edit: when I say mile I really mean 1600 meter which technically is actually 31 feet short of a mile.

20 years ago at a ripped 174, I had a 29" waist, I would nock out 12 miles routinely in 72-75 minutes and I could do 100 pushups in a row, just for run.
Talk about the ravages of time.
Here at 45 I'm just happy to finish a Marathon in under 4 hours.

Actually just reflecting on this, I'm still really strong though. I think that's the last thing that goes.

Age is not an excuse for getting out of shape IMO. A few years back my dad tore his knee up while snowskiing, and he also has back problems off and on due to breaking his back as a young man. Whenever I make it back home (WA) to do some snowboarding he literally pounds me into the dirt. I mean at age 59 he can make run after run and I have to hustle to keep up. Due to his prior injuries, he snowboards which is easier on the knees than skiiing, but still takes a lot of wind if you go at it on the double black diamond runs like we do. He lifts with light weights and swims 3-4 days a week and keeps in great shape. He also eats very healthy. I think he said it had been over 10 years since he ate a french fry or a hamburger from any fast food joint. I think my dad's secret to keeping his wind is swimming. He says its easier on his knees and back than running. I don't know how good it would be for marathon prep though.

My family Doc has been trying to get me to join a pool and swim laps, for the reasons you state. Thing is, I hate swimming laps.
