Last year I saw the most activity From Nov. 13th thru the 16th, now mind you, I was hunting at 2 different locations each of the days.....about 10 miles apart. At one location I saw a six point chasing, looked like an older deer, good sized body, decent rack but I let him pass. The next day I saw some chasing but nothing in range. On the third day I had a 4 point and a heavy 8 point come thru. The 8 was chasing a doe (actually 3) and the 4 was just tagging along behind all of them. The 8 was, I wanna guess in the 150 range and a brute of a body, he came in to about 40 yds. but didn't give me a good shot on him. All three of these hunts were in the morning and all in the same location. I saw these deer between 7:45 to 9:00.
I hunted the other location in the evenings from around 2:30 to the legal expiration time. same three days. I saw a really nice buck chasing a doe around my stand area but never gave me a good shot. He didn't come out until right before dark on the first and third hunt. All I saw were doe on the 2nd day. When I first saw him on the first day he was chasing around one doe.....there were 20 deer all around my stand, including the buck and doe. The second day there were 18 doe all around my stand, but no buck and minus one doe.......we all know where they were at. The third day he was back chasing a doe again.....I don't know if it was the same doe, but definitly the same buck. He had about a 24" outside spread and his rack was atleast 18" tall. He had to go at least 175 if not more.
These were just events that happened while I was out hunting during this time. Unfortunately due to having to work for a living, I wasn't able to get back out until about 5 days later, then I didn't see any bucks, just doe.
Maybe there were bigger trophy bucks that came out while I wasn't there. Maybe days before and after the days I hunted, I'll never know.
It's hard to say exactly which couple of days would be the best for the booner.
Keep in mind that youth deer gun season is Nov. 18th & 19th statewide this year which will make the big boys nocturnal for awhile. As soon as the guns start cracking the deer start going to bed early in the morning and come out just before dark.....atleast where I hunt.
I'm still going with Nov. 11 thru the 18th.
