OK.. here's the pic expanded to show some more. Some of the caps almost completely enclose the acorn, and some do not. These were all picked up within about 10 yards of each other. Maybe there are two kinds here. Don't know...

could very well be sawtooths , there are several variety's. a couple on the far left look a bit more hairy than the one did. i got some sawtooths i'll post a pic of them. they are already out of the caps though.

The ones with the cap almost covering the whole thing look like overcup acorns. Dang, I'm not sure now. There must be two types of oaks relatively close to one another.

like i said earlier with over 600 varieties its pretty easy to get confused. unless of coarse you are the NCBOMAN , seriously this guy knows every tree, bush, fruit, insect, berry, etc made on this earth....cept for maybe that one bush we found up a sassafras wma. remember that funky green one, i believe you took a picture. i figure he knows what it is too by now . here are a few pictures of some sawtooths without the cap. those very well be sawtooths, they are really slick since the cap nearly covers the whole nut. just like the ones on the left . post script: i also think the sawtooths cap falls off very easily if i remember my lesson on them correctly, thats why most of the ones NC brought had no caps. those caps appear to be stuck on them pretty good, especially if you just found them recently. they must be pretty bitter if they havent been ate yet. i'm rethinking now lol

I've never seen a sawtooth acorn ( or AKERN,as some of my wife's people say) that was as big as a quarter. Heck, every year,I look up the red oak vs white oak, lobed leaf vs pointier leaf thing, and STILL manage to forget it by the following year.

OK Bowman - it looks like we need saving... I do anyhow... Of course, the important thing is... are the deer going to be after those acorns, or snub their noses at 'em?

When I was a boy my dad and I use to take long walks in the woods on Sundays. He seemed to know the name and quality or every tree and shrub in the woods, often looking up ahead and predicting what kind of animal sign we'd likely find 'up there'.
'How do you do it?'
It's all in your eyes. What do you see?
'Woods.'
You see woods. A rich man sees money. A cold man sees heat. A hot man sees shade.
An animal sees a grocery store. ;D
------------------------------------------
For dedicated deer hunters, you guys want to give up to easily. Consider every single 2 1/2 yr old deer knows exactly what kind of acorn that is just by the smell alone.
Even Dan Jackson knows what kind of acorn it is. ;D

Their favorite acorn is a white oak acorn right? I have read they will choose this one over all others. Then this acorn must be a sub species of the white oak. But which one? This is driving me NUTS!

I knew the first pic was an owl pellet before I read the answer, but the acorn pic has me stumped
