These deer are highly educated at this park. They come in from the field and before they enter they scan all the trees, it's unreal. 4 times now I've been picked off on setups that for sure any other place those deer are dead. So after getting blown at this morning, I tear it down and pull out all the stops. Scout and find where they're running in response to the pressure and I take my time and select a tree. A split at the base double Oak, so big that with my 3 foot extensions the straps barely make it around, completely surrounded by black cherry trees 15 feet up. I setup between the split Oaks, and all I do is cut slits in the cover for access to the shooting lanes. I then assess what trimming I need to do on the ground to the lanes and I have lanes all around me. Anyway they come in or through I've got them. And I have so much natural cover I could be doing jumping jacks up there and I'm invisible.
But I swear to God these are the luckiest damned deer I have ever seen. Today I had one at 12 yards dead to rights, pin at the top of the crease, almost perfectly broadside. I release and the deer jumps away 2-3 yards holds and then goes back to feeding. I'm like, tip over!!! I nock another arrow, but no shot presents. The deer moves out of sight I wait 15 minutes, looking for my arrow the whole time, it's driving me nuts, I have to go down and check. No arrow. This is nuts. I go to where the doe was standing, crouch down and look up at my stand. Dammit!!! There is a limb with all these branches that I plain could not see from the stand. They were shadowed by some overhanging leaves. I went back and found my arrow which had been deflected some 3 feet. Clean miss, what a relief.
You know that is the only lane that I didn't inspect because from the stand, it looked clean.
NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!!!
It's only clean if you've checked it. I knew that was an entrance from the field and I knew that was a trail that might be travelled. And I didn't check the lane.
I came home and I shot 3, 3arrow groups at the same distance, fast and loose, broadside, quartering away and finally quartering to.
These are the pictures of the last group, real fast, pop, pop, pop.
Dummy hunter, lucky deer.
