I wouldn't wait either. The gun hunting pressure may be what ran the deer there. Once the pressure eases, the deer may not be in there like they are now.
Would be interesting to know if those oaks had acorns this year and what kind of oaks they are, seeing how other areas were spotty.

Here's a far view kind of showing how isolated this Island is: It took me some time to figure the way in but then it wasn't too bad. I had to come in from the west side of the island and cut back at an angle. I just kept following the different deer trails till I found one that wasn't bad. If you look at the main portion of the island it is basically an Island Oak flat. But off to the top right of the island is an island thicket. In that thicket is where he bedded. On the first scouting trip it was just plain obvious following the freshly shredded rubs and fresh huge tracks, where he bedded. I had him come by twice just out of range. I actually took a shot at him off the island. I absolutely believed I could have killed him in that thicket, it was just a matter of having enough time in there till he came through on one of the trails I was covering. If I made a mistake at all, it was that I wasn't aggressive enough and didn't get in there early enough. I wasted a week setup on the outside of the thicket on the main island waiting for him to come out. Go get him NOW!!!

I need to take a day early next week and find a way across to it. i can take the bike in for a big portion of it. it will be quicker than walking and i found 2 old roads that lead to the finger of woods that are the closest to the island. problem is after ohio and here i am quickly running out of gas . i will make it over there as soon as i can though. if i have to take some wood out there i will

Good luck! I spent alot of time in the late 70s/early 80's sunk to my waist, hollering for help, over in Dorchester.Spent some of last week there, for old time's sake.Realised on the way out,in the dark, that I should have put on the CHEST WADERS! I'm getting too dang old to slog thru that crap. And yet I go.......
