Went to a place I used to hunt alot of years ago,but not much the last few years.Seems no one is hunting it.Parked the truck near a barn, and headed down a dirt road.Popped out on a 10-12 acre field, with a pond over on the wood edge.I see the back ends of a few deer racing over the pond berm, and into a little island of young, thick pines, and junk.I figure that they saw or scented me.I keep walking. Then a doe busts back out not 30 yds in front of me,with a fork a spike, and a decent buck hot on her heels. The fork and spike peel off and loop back into the pines, but th doe runs around the pond with the bigger buck still on her.She pops back up on the pond bank, and th buck follows her.I'm kneeling at this point, maybe 80-90 yds off.Get the gun up,and scope on him.High, wide 7 pt,but looks to be a young deer.Lots of potential,so I let him walk.(Actually, hadn't even capped the gun,so it's easy to say I passed him).He followed her a good 150-200 yds across a wide open field, and into some more pines.I set up on some fresh sign I found on Wednesday, but nothing else that evening.Did bust a few out of the field in the dark. I usually see bucks running does again,at the very end of December, first few days of January.Oh well,I'll get back after them next week.Owner told me he's seen some nice bucks around. In the last week!
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
