I took off at 100 pm yesterday to still hunt my way through a new property we are managing. I jumped a pretty nice buck the very first time I went there and decided while I slunk around the woods checking my stands and the deer travel around them Id see if I could luck up and get the deer again and maybe make a good rifle shot on him.
I spent the majority of the time really studying who had been moving where and keeping an extra close eye out for fresh k9 sign as the trapping season gets underway on the first. I found some serious new sign that left me smiling and ready to call SCtrkyhntr and tell him toget ready for a Monday afternoon bowhunt.
I guess I got a little too distracted because as I made my way 150 yards past the area I jumped him last time I dropped my gaurd quickened my pace and was headin out. Sure enough I hear brush crashing and there he and another buck are crashing towards a new opening that was just cut for a sporting clays station. SOB ran right smack through it 60 yards in front of me. I threw the rifle up swung on through him , squeezed the trigger, and found the safety still on! The next seconds fumbling with that cost me the shot. He was a nice one well outside his ears. The other one looked to be a small 6 or 8 I wasn't watching him to close.
Back to it this afternoon. The same sign that had me smiling has me believeing this buck is working two of the areas we have standsites picked out. Going back this afternoon maybe we can stick him.
