agree, murder isn't a good comparison.
How about robbery?
Poaching is a form of robbery. Robbing a bank is a Federal crime and carries stiffer penalty than shoplifting from walmart.
Why not have much stiffer penalties for those that poach trophy bucks?
For the sake of definition, let's call a trophy buck one that would score 120 or above.

NC,
I can agree with your robbery logic. I think there are some states that actually levee fines in regards to the "trophy" aspect of the crime. Especially in circumstances where a deer is poached and sold. Some of these situations certainly become federal.
Personally I think poaching should pack a much stiffer penalty. Losing your hunting privileges isn't going to keep a man from poaching, nor is taking his gun, truck or a few hundred dollars. Make him spend some time in jail and garnish his wages for $5-10,000 and then you have a deterent.

i dont understand why you would want stiffer penalties for poaching "trophy" bucks versus any other deer. are you saying that poaching a "trophy" buck is a worse crime then poaching a doe. what makes the illegal taking of a "trophy" buck, any less of a crime then a button buck.
poaching is poaching period!!
and the penalty should be stiff across the board no matter what animal it is.
