this is turning out to be quite interesting to me. I've always wondered why the whitetail numbers decreased on assategue very rapidly. there were always whitetails and sika deer there but the sika deer populations exploded in the late 80"s and the whitetail numbers decreased to the point that they didn't even let you hunt them at all. i'm thinking now that the sika must have cleared all of the food that the whitetails ate and they simply starved to death . somehow the numbers have come back a little ( enough that they let you shoot resticted bucks only) so i'm guessing that some of the food sources have grown to the point the sikas simply cant eat all of it. i have 100 sawtooth oaks coming through the state on march 15th, i may approach the park rangers and see if i cant plant 5 out on the island. i'm not sure they can survive in that environment though. thanks for the info on the different species txm

I've seen some NICE whitetail bucks on Assateague over the last 15 years of hunting there. There was noticeable drop in numbers a while back, but still see more whitetails than sikas,DURING legal hours. ;D. In the 70's DNR used to give you 3 more Fri/Sats in Dorchester,in an effort to kill 'em up.Then I think they realized that they could turn a buck, from non residents.Used to be some boys from PA hunting out of Bestpitch that used to load the boat in '79 and '80.I mean 3,4,5 every trip!Seems that there's as many NY and PA hunters at Assateague as locals nowadays,as well,at least during the ML season.

Dave, When you say NICE bucks, can you expound? Approx P&Y scores? widths? antler shape and traits of the island? I haven't rode over there yet but it may make for a good afternoon walk after turkey hunting.

Okay, maybe I shouldn't have capitalized NICE! ;D Still have seen some fairly heavy racks.Nothing more than maybe 18" inside, but decent mass.Very symmetrical 10 a few years back.Had binos on him for quite a while.Out in the open,on the marsh. Then, moments later, a long-tined 7,came within 20 yds and proceeded to work out his frustration on a tree. They KNOW! (this was during the NO whitetail years). Not much on scoring deer. Not like we're growing the antlers.Have a couple 20+ inside.I like the oddballs-lots of kickers and drops.iLook nice to me,and that's ENOUGH!
