well, me and Davehawk went out last night to roost birds but got there too late and didnt have any luck .
Got out this morning 1/2 hour before sunup and on the way in I heard at least 20 different birds gobbling from the roost. Birds were a gobblin everywhere. I have an idea of where I was going and it was hard not to just turn my attention to each birds sounding out from the roost. i stuck to my gameplan and found a setup in the general area i was going to hunt. My favorite spot on the field was being taken by another hunter we met last night roosting birds. I knew when i asked him as he was walking out where he was going he was going to say " the field on the right side up thar". since he was going to be in the field/clearcut i figured on going in a bit farther. Dave setup on a clearcut to the left.
once in place I could hear several birds sounding off in the distance, I called a few soft calls mocking the hens i could hear, they were calling ever so soft. A couple of calls here and there and i had a few responders making their way towards me, taking their time i might add. 1/2 hour later i started calling a bit louder and got a multiple gobble or half gobbles lol within 50 yards. i started to softly yelp with a cluck and a purr thrown in. the birds were sounding all at once and i couldnt tell if any were mature or not. they came right in looking for henny but to my surprise i had 5 jakes walking in circles in front of me within 25 yards. i had several shots on different birds but there were no longbeards, just 3to 5 inch jake beards. they did put a nice show on so i kept calling just to watch em strut around gobbling at every call i made, another tom joined up with them but it was only a small maybe 18 lb with a 7 inch beard, i figured a late hatch two year old. they hung around and showed for me but no good toms came by, i decided to move on.
i walked a logging road stopping every 100 yards or so to see if I could get a shock gobble.once i rounded the corner i heard another batch of gobbles. i quickly set up and began calling. it took every bit of 1 minute to call in the 4 jakes with small hitler beards. could have had another jake, but not on the first day. all in all a fun day and i ended up seeing 9 jakes and 1 two year old runt . Dave only hooked up with a couple of hens but a good time was had i do believe, he did hear all of the gobbles on the roost, the big toms just didnt wanna play.fun time.
