Our season opened the 16th.Sat. and Sun.the toms were coming to calls, the rest of week we heard nothing no hens or toms. They would'nt answer either, the birds are real flighty too.Is there any reason for this behavour?

What does "flighty " mean? Spooky ? Like you guys have bumped em repaetedly and they fly off easier now?
Turkeys talk to each other every day and do it by calling. If your not hearing them its either that you are spooking the heck out of them and they know your in the woods or they have moved. Id suggest managing your hunting pressure better so your not shutting them up , or getting the boots laced up and scouting until you find them again.

Thanks hatracked, yes flighty means spooky. The place I hunt is public so there is a lot pressue.I have moved and located a small group,I'm going to move a little farther in most of the other hunters don't like to walk that far or are from the city and might get lost.lol

Public land can have its drawbacks for sure. Theres some public land that couldnt get my attention if it were the last place to hunt . I have found some good lpublic lands here in SC over the years but it took lots of walking and going " way on back ther " like youve found.
Weve hunted an old cemetary site on a piece of public land for five or six seasons. Weve taken several dozen mature toms in these years and the action , gobbling, and birds sightings remained consistant until pressure finaly broke the spot last year. Opening day , it sounded like a gunners convention and what toms survived the opening meley finally realized the past years killing fields werent the place to do the spring thing anymore.
Being public land , we cant manage the pressure , but while we kept this little corner nook of that wma quiet , we checked more birds hands down against the other public land hunters on other areas of the very same wma. We toted tom after tom until they finally figured out where our killing fields were. Weve moved on now and are looking for new honey holes in other states. Theres some damned good public land hunting out there you just got to be willing to go way over yonder to get to the low pressure spots. When you find one keep it quiet , it will last longer.

Speaking of not being able to control the pressure on public land.....yesterday I went out about 5:30 pm and had a tom and hen working to me at about 100 yds. When this farmer came right by me on his tractor >:(well you know the rest of the story. The state lets them farm little patches for feed for the game and such,I talked to another hunter and he said he did it to him also.He knew wher I was cuz he saw me go in.
