My son and I bundled up and went out this morning. It was clear but real cold , record cold in the high 30's. We went back into a river tract we hunt where SCturkey hunter has been seeing some strutting birds. Better than that he called 7 in there two days ago. As we went in the sign was thick, obviously plenty of toms using this hidden field for a strut zone.
So anyhow we set up and let the sun rise. No gobbles whatsoever. So we start blind calling a bit and I hear something in the grass coming up the field edge. I ease my head around and see a large male yote slinking towards the hen deke . He paused on the edge of the field ten feet from my son .
Michael was playing cameraman for dad today so I can shoot one on film . It was his first camera attempt and he figured out real quick its hard to get that camera set up so you can really catch all the possible action. He was out of position and the yote got nervous, probably smelled us. He scooted back where he came from and I gave him a few clucks to try and turn him around. He turned and quartered the wind moving back into gun range.
Now Im stuck however. I was set up for a shot left and this was hard right over my shoulder and in all actuality my son was going to get a severe ear blast if I shot . I had to let him walk off , despite really wanting to dust that turkey eating sob. We never got a second of him on tape .
We stuck the morning out hearing no turkey seeing no turkey but verifying through the ridiculous amount of gobbler sign that this afternoon I know where Im hunting. I see a double smackdown in my near future.
