Despite the temps hovering around 30 degrees at night and the wind blowing 20-25 all weekend, 5 hunters managed to put 5 birds on the ground, including myself. I really wasn't very positive going into the weekend, but had people to guide. Here is a quick and dirty on the hunts.
Saturday morning: Right off the roost had a bird come into the dekes and I put him on the ground with my smoke pole. 17lbs, 6" beard and 7/8" spurs.
Saturday Mid-day: Called in a jake and tom, but the hunter blasted the jake for some reason and did not allow the tom to work in. I guess one of those deals where a bird in the bad is better than nothing. Oh well.
Saturday Evening: Roosted birds
Sunday morning: Hunter from Indiana had a nice 2 year old on the ground before 7. Bird gobbled once on the roost and we set up. He hit the ground about 80 yards from us and took about 30 minutes to work in, coming very cautiously. 19lbs, 9" beard and 7/8" spurs. 30 yard shot give or take.
Sunday afternoon: Took my sons out and after a couple hours had 2 long beards, a jake and 3 hens keeping us company. The long beards came into dekes and my 11 year old dusted the largest with about a 40 yard shot. My 9 year old was disappointed not getting the double, but the 20 guage just doesn't have the mustard at 40 and I don't think the birds were coming any closer. It was my son's first bird. 20lbs 3oz., 10 1/2" paintbrush and 1" spurs.
Sunday evening: met up with a guy at his property and 30 minutes into the hunt, he dropped a 4" bearded jake.

Sounds like a good weekend!
Today was our opener here in WV and we never heard a bird. We walked for 4 and a half hours covering about 2 miles, crow calling and using hen calls and never heard a thing.
While walking out we jumped a hen that was nested. We saw her nest, she had 6 to 8 eggs in it. We left it alone, of course, and got out of the area so she could come back. We had 6 inches of snow where we hunted.
Will try this weekend, temperatures will be warmer and no snow!
