Being no turkey hunting expert, I tend to try and relate the spring season to the deer rut somewhat. Logic tells me there is a certain few days that are better than all others for calling a tom. I would assume this to be when most all the hens have gone to setting. Is this true and how does this correlate with most season dates? I've heard late season is better but everyone rushes in opening day like there's no tomorrow.

NC, Hat has told me that once a Tom is all hen up you can just about forget getting him to come to a call. That's why the early morning yelp's and annimated wing flaps help get the bird early off the roost. Later in the seaon ov=nce the hens have been finished up with I quess it's much like a buck on the rampage to fine any left overs. >Last season the swamp bird I took was looking hard and 3 others came with him. Good thing about ol Hat he knows his birds !

Bowman , timing is everything but first crack is just as good. Opening day draws a crowd because the birds are fresh. Every hen they have heard for 11 months prior has turned out to be the real deal. With a little scouting calling a tom in is not to tough. At the same time hen breeding activity is generally at a peak for the opening day.
The best hunting in my opinion comes in the later stages of the laying cycle when hens really start cutting their time with gobblers and start loafing in the nesting areas. Gobblers go on the prowl just like bucks and this starts earlier and earlier in the day. The activity peaks 1-5 days after the vast majority of hens go to setting. Those are majic days in the spring woods and typically 95 % of the hunters have given up. Mor than one year we double our annual take during those few days.
