i dont know much about a compass to help you out. i would recommend a gps over a compass though. i know vast difference in cost but also a vast difference in performance as well. on big tracts of land a gps is priceless imo.

many GPS units don't have a compass that'll work unless the GPS is working. Under a canopy of pines my Magellan 315 is useless. A hand compass should always be included on any venture that could keep you in the woods after dark. Liquid filled are quicker and better. You'll never see a liquid filled compass sit there and act like it's not sure where to point like some magnetic needle compasses do. If you're planning on doing coursing work, a compass with all the gadgets is required. If you're just using it to reference your way back out, a simple job is best. I haven't looked around but I bet most of the popular stores want to sell much more than a hunter needs. ;D I'll take a pic of the one I use.

The one on the left is the magnetic needle type. It works but not as well as the antique on the right. It was my dad's and no telling how old it is. It's liquid and has a crack in the lense but it still works fine.

I just bought a liquid filled Silva on ebay. We'll see how that does. Thanks for the input.
