I've posted this a number of times in various locations. Seems that someone always gets some good out of it, just like I did the 1st time I read it.
Need some good hunting practice? Get a Nerf soccer ball, a large washer, and about 3' of 1/8 or 1/4" rope. Thread the rope through the center of the ball with a coat hanger and tie it off with the washer so it won't pull through. Tie a loop or big knot in the other end for a handle. Take it out in the field, get a good swing, and throw it as far as you can. A good throw and a better bounce can get it as far as 50 yds. Shoot at it where it lies. If it's out of sight, 'stalk' it until you have a shot. How far away it is is your problem, just like shooting a deer. Use field points and the ball will last a long time. Use broadheads or judos and it won't last 10 shots. If you hit it on the edge, it will flip and bounce, stopping the arrow. The ball has enough give so the arrows stop before going through. I've never had a passthrough until the ball is shot to pieces (using aluminum arrows, anyway). The soccer ball is about the size of a deer's vitals. If you're REALLY good, you can use a smaller ball and practice heart shots, but I doubt that I'll join you. I get tired of hunting for arrows.
