Saturday we set up both the IBO and Hunter's 3D Courses at Izaak Walton in Poolesville, Maryland. This effort was sponsored by the Animal Connection Deer Management Team, and the Maryland Bowhunter's Society Central Chapter in preparation for the shoot on April 30th! It should be a fun day, and I hope some of you can join us. For $10 you get in the door and get an event T-shirt. See the web-site animalconnection.com for details. This is a family event and there will be food available and events for kids. You can bring your own grill-items and we'll cook 'em for you!
Anyhoo, the Hunter's Course is free-form 3D with no set ranges and no scoring - you shoot for fun. After we set it up, we walked it with our bows. I'd never shot a 3D course before. The idea is that you walk along looking for game and when you see it you take what you think is your first killing shot. What a blast it was! We had everything from a grey squirrel to an Elk. The elk is set-up for a first shot opportunity at pretty long range across a meadow, and I was WAY off on my range estimation. Somebody in our group had a range-finder, so before I shot they checked it, and man, was I off - would have missed completely. I guess the lesson is that big animals are farther off than they appear!
Unbelievably I never lost an arrow or missed an animal, but I must admit that some shots did not results in the best of hits. Learned alot about shooting from the ground.
Hope some of you can make it in April!
