Had some interesting shoots on Sunday at the Maryland Bowhunter's Society Central Chapter sponsored shoot at The Izaak Walton League outside of Poolesville.
I learned something about Davehawk and his crossbow - man is he good with that thing!
We had a $5 pot-split competition where we shot at the ass-end of a deer at 92 yards (unknown range at time of shoot, but there were many guesses). There were about ten hunters who bellied up to the line to take their chances - 3 shots each. All types of bows were represented from stick-bows to a scoped crossbow. The first round there were NO hits. I couldn't believe it! Finding the range proved to be too difficult on the first round.
So... for the next round to help in aiming we took a 3X5 foot block of foam and put it behind the target. Everyone got another go with 3 more arrows.
By round 2 Davehawk had found the range with his scoped crossbow and put 3 out of 3 arrows into the target in about a 10" group. WOW.
I had to aim 20-25 feet up in a tree behind the target with my 50-yard pin and dropped the first two arrows into the deer. One in it's back just above the tail, and one in the legs about a foot below the pellet maker. My third shot missed the foam block and everything. Davehawk & I were the only ones get arrows into the deer, and most people didn't even hit the 3X5 foot foam block. The recurves never had a chance.
So in about 60 shots, only 5 found the target.
Man... 92 yards is a LONG way.
