Now that I'm ramping up and only doing hunting specifc practice. I'm pretty much just shooting 2 dozen arrows. 3 groups of 4 arrows each, out of both bows, at the 3-D target, one slightly quartering to, one broadside and one qurtering away pretty good.
Every once in a while I'll shoot a few fixed heads out of the Outback I only shoot fixed heads one at a time. But that's pretty much it. I am shooting daily though.
It seems like that's plenty and the quality of the practice seems improved.
How does that compare to what you boys are doing and what are you finding works best?

I shoot about 5 nights out of 7. I generally shoot about a 100 arrow set total in groups of 5 arrows. I generally start out at 20 then 30 and 40, then I work my way back in. I like to finish up on the 3d target , I ussually shoot at dusk and light is low towards the end. I havent finely tuned the sights on the new bowyet, but plan on doing it some this week, its shooting plenty good to kill a deer right now though. I've worked just a little on broadheads so far but the little time i spent on them , it appears no big problems will need to be overcome. I practice some from heights but I hunt a lot from the ground and have never had any problems shooting a deer from a stand if I'm sighted well from the ground. Judging distance from a stand is the most important thing and the most misjudged . I like to shoot and have an easy deal with it, just walk outside . its easy for me to practice 10 or 12 hours a week . some days are better than others, but most times I expect too much . I've pulled the release plenty the last few weeks and will continue till wed, then take a few days off (camping ) and pick it back up the following monday.

er, I haven't shot a compound in a couple of weeks... been recurvin it. ;D With a sighted in compound I'm reasonably sure I can kill a deer at close range with the first arrow even if I don't shoot for a year. I wouldn't try a 40yd shot on a deer right now but only because I'm not freshly practiced. One practice session will have me good to 40. A couple of practice sessions and I'll be good to 60 or 70 depending on which bow I'm shooting and how I feel. My practice usually come in spurts. I shoot several day in a row and it may be a week or more before I shoot again. I shoot far more often during hunting season, checking my arrows and shooting almost daily. When I do practice, shooting around 30 arrows is the norm but sometimes more if I'm shooting past 40. I nearly always shoot 3 shot groups with the compound. Recurve is another story. It requires devotion. With it, I sometimes use just one arrow the entire practice session.

I'm shooting out to 60 yds, but that's only to make sure my form is good, and to tweek the pins in. I'm feeling pretty confident out to 30 on live deer right now. I'm only shooting about twice a week, and need to step that up to 4 times a week. I shoot alot of 3D targets at the League, usually only one arrow per animal. We scattered a dozen different target animals out at the range, and it's fun to grab a dozen arrows and pop each target. I sometimes use the range finder and sometimes not (but never use it on the IBO course). I shot a 249 on the 30-target IBO course saturday. I was only shooting so-so, and missed the kill zone on several targets. It was so danged hot that it wore me out. We have alot of targets between 25 and 40 yards, and some are quite small - like turkeys, foxes, and coyotes. Range estimation is my main problem. Most of my misses are up/down, not left/right.
