I don't get shook up over fish. Big bucks, yes. Turkeys, yes. But not stupid fish ... until about 2hrs ago. I've caught a lot of catfish that went over 20lbs in my life so it's not like I'm a beginner but good grief. I just fought probably the biggest fish I've ever had on a line. Had just a couple of hours this afternoon after work so Israel and I put over near the house and went in the river fishin with cane poles. We had caught about a half dozen fair size bream on fishing worms when I tied into the catfish just before dark. It was like a grown man trying to take my pole. Line creaking, pole cracking, and the ziiiip of tight line cutting the water, awesome. He made two strong runs and turned the boat sideto. Then he made that last strong run and I knew things were strained to the limit when the line snapped. Fresh 25lb test he broke. And that's the one that got away.

LOL When the old pole does a double over you know you tied into a good one.
I haven't been catfishing in near two years. I used to go about every weekend and usually all night. Largest boated fish was a 37lb flathead, with the majority between 15-25 lbs. 35# braided Spider Wire was the line of choice and it hardly ever broke, but I've had to cut off after being snagged up on logs etc because I couldn't turn the fish. I found that all those little teeth really sand paper their way through monofilament line after a fight.

a 37 pound cat is a handful. ;D
I'm thinking about rigging a pole with some braided line I have. I don't want to see the fish that can break it. ;D

I hate when that happens , always makes ya wonder exactly how big was that sucker . you've been having some good fishin down that way , especially for the heat. the braided line is really good till ya get it snagged lol . then its tough stuff , and cutting it sometimes doesnt work when it way out there. losing all that line just isnt an option. pretty good size fish to break the 25lb test though, think maybe you had a muskie or something ?

It was a catfish I'm sure. I want to think he is 50pounds or more but I'll likely never know. Rick, this braided line ain't the modern hi-dollar stuff. I got a big spool of it in the 50cent bin years ago and it only takes about 20ft of it to rig a cane pole. I'll get a pic, it's probably perfect for the task. It's about time to head out again and see what's biting today.

I would think it would take more than 20ft of line and a cane pole to land a 50# catfish. Or are you planning on getting towed around the river for a while? ;D I've got two or three spools of that Spider Wire just sitting in my box. If you want I could send a spool your way for free. Sorry, I can't help but post pics. ;D smg.photobucket.com/albums/v465/DanBlair/?action=view¤t=ebay012.jpg&refPage=&imgAnch=imgAnch2Dang it! One of the pics won't resize on photobucket, so I'm posting a link.
