Harbor Tackle in Ocean City weighted in the next potential State of Maryland’s record striper this morning. It tiped the scales at 57 lb. 4 oz. The fish was caught at Assateague. If this fish holds up as the new record, then Assateague Island will account for the last four MD. coastal records (94, 2003, 2005 and 2006).

Erika and I went to stinky beach today and tried our luck. talk about cold , the north wind and mid 50 weather combination was deadly. we lasted a few hours with no bites or fish. i'll have to go to assateague later this week and try my luck there. my guess is a 60 lber will be caught soon enough .

its been confirmed , must have been the same fish State Record Striped Bass Caught for Atlantic Division -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Saturday, May 6, Gary Smith of Keedysville caught a state record striped bass weighing 57 lbs 6 oz. The catch set a new Atlantic record, surpassing the old record by over four pounds. Smith was surf fishing on Assateague Island using cut bunker (Atlantic menhaden) on a handmade rod with 17 lb test when he caught the 53-inch long striper with a 30-inch girth. There is a possibility that the fish recently left the Chesapeake Bay after spawning in one of its many tributaries. Maryland maintains three separate state record categories for striped bass - Chesapeake, Freshwater and Atlantic. The Chesapeake record is the largest of the three at 67 pounds 8 ounces. www.dnr.state.md.us/2006art/record_bass.jpg
