OCEAN CITY MARYLAND FISHING REPORT
Updated: July 26, 2006
Welcome to the Ocean City Fishing Report from Captain Skip Maguire of Skip's Bait & Tackle.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another week has passed this summer in Ocean City and many of the anglers recovered quite nicely after the tropical storm passed offshore.
Even though the higher summertime temps slightly declined this past week we had to compete with the affects of the first tropical storm of the season offshore. The flounder fishing this week was still not what we’d like to see but we still had a decent amount being weighed in. Most of the flatties out there being caught were undersized but still left amateur anglers with a sense of accomplishment. Croaker fishing in the bay this week has picked back up yet very little have been keepers. On a better note the striper fishing has continued to pick back up with the tides coming in at better times. The surf action has also continued to pick back up with kingfish, sharks, croaker, and blues. This week has been a great week for using bloodworms. Bloodworms have been catching multiple types of fish using various combos including squid. If you’re have trouble catching the big one this week I suggest trying a bloodworm combo.
One of our local boys, Darren Glass of Ocean City, brought in a nice catch the other day weighing 2lbs and measuring a length of 17 inches. He was fishing for his flounder on the 4th street bulkhead using live minnows. Also fishing on the 4th Street bulkhead was another local angler, Donald Bolt of Ocean City. Donald was using live minnows when he reeled in his 18 inch 2 lb. 3 oz. flounder. If you have a youngster or amateur angler with you make sure to also check out the 9th street pier. It’s a free pier and usually has a nice clear sandy bottom. This is generally perfect for the beginner angler because it will avoid getting your bottom rig caught up in the rocks.
For those of you who wish to feel a little bit sportier you might want to check out the “Pony Island Express.” This week was a great week for them bringing back many happy anglers with plenty of flatties to be weighed in. Meghan Trovato of Baltimore, Md. caught her 18" flattie fishing with Capt. Howard Cleaver on the "Pony Island Express."
Another successful angler on the “Pony Island Express” is Juanita Wilkinson of Baltimore, Md. And finally topping off the ladies this week on the “Pony Island Express” was amateur angler Carly McCardle of Wheeling, W.V. She caught her 18 1/2" 2 lb. 2 oz. flattie while out on the bay with Captain Howard Cleaver. The “Pony Island Express” is docked at the “Old Town Marina” on Dorchester Street. If you would like to fish with them just give them a call at 410-289-6720. They’ll take care of all your fishing needs with a two hour fishing trip targeting flounder and croaker in the bays of Ocean City. Don’t forget to make reservations with them for some great family fun.
One of the nicest weigh-ins of the week goes to Captain Bill Leinemann of Ocean City. He had a great day of fishing offshore with his “Wave Dancer.” While trolling with Ballyhoo he was able to land two big blues measuring 32” and 34.” If you are unable take a boat offshore another nice place to snag some blues is at the Oceanic Pier at the end of Ocean City. With the incoming and outgoing tides the blues are still biting on the Gotcha Lures and Spec Rigs. Although not many are keepers they still provide a nice day or evening of fishing here in Ocean City.
All of the Striper trips this week produce nice ammount of fish but all under were under sized arround the 22 - 24 inch size. The hot spots included the north jetty area as usual. Also during the day on the 50 bridge many people were catching flounder with bridge spreader bars but had little luck with producing keepers.
This year at Skip’s we have three charter boats for your charter needs. We have a 32-foot Topaz Express with twin diesels.
On this boat we will offer trips for marlin, tuna, dolphin, and bluefish. This is a full day charter and will leave at 6 a.m. and will return at 6 p.m. The second boat is our 30-foot Mako CC with twin outboards. On this boat we offer full-day and half-day trips. The half-day trips are for striper, flounder, croaker, tog, sheepshead, and trigger fish. The full-day trips are for tuna, and bluefish.
Our third boat is a 24-foot Sea Ark with a single outboard. This boat is for the bay and inlet charters. The price for a half-day charter on this boat is $350. We will fish for striper, flounder, croaker, tog and sheepshead. We also have a new half-day trip for families. This trip will consist of sight-seeing, clamming, and crabbing. It also is only $350 for a half day of family fun. Reservations are recommended for all trips, Call Captain Skip at 410-430-5436 or 410-289-8555.
The offshore fishing this week should be looking up with a weather forecast of a few scattered thunderstorms. Bay fishing and surf fishing should continue to bring in the numbers as well. If you have any fishing stories or fishing pictures you would like to share with my readers, please feel free to email them to me at skipstackleshop@aol.com. I will be sure to use them in my future articles.
So get out there and fish. Who knows? Maybe I’ll be writing about you next week.
