With my 06, any deer I can see is in danger somewhat but my real expertice is in a 30-30 winchester.
I honestly believe I can shoot beside anyone alive with 30-30s at long range and/or at running deer.
That said, I so much prefer bowhunting I don't even gun hunt any more. ;D

I'm kinda in your camp. I do like hunting with muzzleloaders though. That White Javelina pistol particularly. Pretty much, it's a bow that goes boom. Gotta get pretty close. At least, I do. I'm not much of a pistol shot. I'd dare say I wouldn't want to go up against you with my pistol vs. your bow. ;D Come to think of it, I probably wouldn't want to go up against myself pistol vs. bow. ;D ;D

;D lol, pistols are my weak suit. I'd be almost as well off to throw it at the target. Whenever I'm hunting with any kind of gun and a deer gets within bowrange, I'm like, I couldda had a V8.

I'm also a bow hunter, I have been most of my life. I take two with a bow and one with a front stuffer each year, cant use a cartridge rifle in Illinois or I would use the Sharps. I think Deer are about as dumb as a bucket full of rocks. It's there curiosity that brings them down. When my Kids were around 6 or 7 I starte to take them out with me when Deer season opened up so we went out and and I would say now watch and learn how to get close to these critters. I took a few twine strings with me and go out in the corn field and cut a few corn stocks and I would tie a few around there waist and mine and walk out in a open bean field that has been picked 15-20 feet from the edge of the standing corn just before sunset. I told the Boys not to talk just sit and watch. Now you know Kid 6 years old just cant sit still for more then 5 minutes, that's why they catch more fish then I will, it's the motion that catches the fish , well the same works with deer. As long as your outline is broke they cant figure out what the heck is making those corn stalks shake in the open been field and they come walking up on you bobbing there heads up and down now and then and testing the air, I would just clear my throat a little and they would flick there tails a little and take a few more steps and pick up a few beans and keep working our way. Well some times they would walk up so close that I could see the moisture beads and the hair move back and forth in there nostrils. To this day they they will still talk about how close Dad could make the deer walk up to him in a wide open field. So I guess what I'm getting at is it is no more of a challenge to hunt deer with a bow then a rifle or shot gun. But it is a challenge to learn to shoot and load for one of these black powder rifles. Heck I been at it since 15 or 16 and that is 50 years now and I'm still learning what makes these things shoot with black powder, and shoot good to past 1000 yards, not that I will take a shot at game at that distance, but it's like taking a long bow or one of these new fangled bows with wheels on it and shoot them at 150 or 200 yards. It's just plain fun to do. I feel it's important to learn how "to do" no mater what you use to hunt with.
With 5 or 6 wiews in several weeks to me shows that there is not much interest, I hope it will pick up, there is a lot to be learned from no mater what the subject it.

I was actually interested in learning more about your sport. i know nothing at all about it short of 1 program on tv that i saw about it. looks like a sh*tload of fun to me, but also looks very pricey to get into. i think a good portion of our group are actually interested in learning more about it or at least reading about it. I personally dont believe Rick gave it much of a chance , some things take time . i would hope even if a thread only gets a few views it would still be worth posting. you never know who is reading it and getting good tips from it. i thought it to be interesting reading but since i know squat about it, its pretty hard to post a response to anything. i have many interests and am always wanting to learn more about, well just about everything. by the way through all the years of hunting corn fields i have never even thought about tying corn stalks to myself , pretty neat i'll have to try it . i would hope that sharpsman and his friends would stick around and give it a chance .

just wanted to add that as you can see we are a very young forum at the moment . we just had our first birthday . we are about as active as any of the hunting forums out there at this slow time, including some of the big ones. by late summer and early fall things will get busier and more members will join as we grow. if you build it they will come is what i'm trying to say .
