But not smoke poles. 26 years shooting smokepoles have killed 15 deer with a flintlocks, that I built myself. Decided to try something new. Joined this group because it seems some of the members live close to me. Baltimore MD Land of the free??? yeah right. Just bought a Savage 10 ml been too the range twice with it still haven't found the magic bullet. Starting to think this being a 200 yd rifle is a bunch of whooie. Sure you can get 200 yard accuracy but you have to adjust your scope. If I wanted to do that I could get the same results with one of my time period correct smokepoles. Heck I kilt a deer at 135 yds with my 54 cal. PA longrifle while still holding the iron sight on fur. I'm waiting, now, for some 250 gr hornady bullets. The only thing about the Sav is the wham bam cleaning. But I never was much bothered about cleaning smokepoles. Well that is my intro. Dave

welcome dave. i have a savage ml2. its a great gun. you just havent found what your gun likes yet. there are so many different powder/bullit/sabot combos its crazy. i found the 300 gr hornadys shoot a little better in my gun than the 250 gr. they are sst's by the way. i use a mmp hph 24's for sabots. the 12's are too big for my gun. it is impossible to hand load the 12's. just too tight. in your gun the 24's might be too loose. your gun is easy a 200yrder you just have to play with it. do you bow hunt too?
you have a private message too!

eshore- Use to bow hunt but had severe med problem several years ago and I am just starting to get back into shooting (firearms) on a regular basis. Since I have been out of the shooting world for a couple of years I have found that the number of gun shops has dried up over here on the east shore. Bass pro in glen burnie use to have a good supply of reloading equipment but that has changed. There supply of MZ supplies is very limited as are their powder selections. Every shooting component I have bought for this new fangled contraption (Sav10) has come from out of state. I'm sitting here now waiting for a delivery of SST's. Can't buy V V powders anywhere in MD. Man I hope I can move out of this state soon.

Welcome Dave - I've heard of people using 200gr and 250gr shockwaves in 50/40 sabots with good results in the Savage. You might look at Randy Wakeman's web-site on Savage Muzzleloading for tips. See: randywakeman.com/savage3.htmYou'll find a pet loads article there.
