" Castleman's Run Lake (486 acres) Brooke and Ohio counties.
Located off U.S. Route 40 near Potomac Settlement in Brooke County, the area is approximately three miles south of Bethany along county Route 32. It is comprised of mixed hardwoods, brush land and open fields. HUNTING IS LIMITED DUE TO THE SIZE OF THE AREA. Good hunting opportunities exist for deer, turkey, grouse, raccoon and squirrel. Castleman's Run Lake, 22 acres, provides fishing for bluegill, catfish, muskellunge, northern pike and trout. A boat launch ramp is located on the area. Overnight camping and open fires are not permitted. Toilet facilities are available. Owned by WVDNR."
I grew up in Brooke county as a child, I used to love catching trout in the spring at Casteman's Run Lake. I was there every year when they would stock the lake. used to be a favorite time of the year.
Now I am more interested in turkeys this time of year, and turkeys are at Castemans Run WMA. a small tract but has really good turkey numbers for its size. I had 5 Toms sounding off very late in season while out scouting with a turkey call 2 years ago, while in the area visiting relatives. the turkey numbers were very good.
The Northern panhandle has always been known for large bodied deer and Castemans is no exception. Trophy racks may be far and few between but the size alone of the deer is well worth a look.
Grouse numbers were once bountiful but were low the last time I looked for the "thunder chicken" I would rate it maybe an 8 for turkey and simply due to its small size a 7 for deer although the numbers are still strong there. could be difficult if crowded.
