I've hunted down there a few times but I've spent much more time walking and looking. It's big, very big, and I have only scratched the property. Conman (Mike Noles) has a primitive campground and cabins on Lake Phelps which is the best place to base a hunt there. The campsites are $15 a night but no elec or hookups. He does have a showerhouse and restrooms there and part of the refuge is right across the road. The pics above were taken about a mile from Mike's place. Btw, Mike is very helpful with refuge hunting info so don't think you need to book a hunt with him to camp there, obtain info, and enjoy the refuge. www.homestead.com/conmans/One of my favorite spots is very remote and rugged and certainly isn't for the faint of heart as it requires a boatride out of Frying Pan Landing along the Alligator River that could strand a guy overnight or longer if the wind comes up. Just being in such a remote and little traveled spot will make a lot of guys uneasy on good days, let alone an inclimate day. My kind of place. ;D I'm planning on hunting down there a good bit this year with my boys, esp during the Dec bear season. oh, several trad guys are planning on hunting out of Conman's the opening week of bow season and I'll probably ride down there and check em out at some point. I understand some flint knappers will be there so I'll be all eyes n ears for lessons.

I was down there during the first draw hunt but only drove around some and looked. The pics above are NOT from the Pungo Unit where the draw hunt is held. Pungo has crop fields and good woods to hunt. Hunter traffic around the fields makes deeper woods more attractive to me. Expect to see bears and obey the regs to the t. The wardens there are no joke. Lots of deer too.
