I've hunted this place for years, but it's worth a note here.
Four of us hunted the Monocacy NRMA for three days in early muzzleloader season. We took 3 deer, and had chances at many more.
I saw a nice 9-pointer / 160lb being dragged out of there on Thursday morning. We all saw nice bucks with 8 points. We all saw deer every day, sometimes many deer (more than 10). I took a nice 8-pointer / 150lb on Saturday.
The biggest buck I've ever seen while in a tree-stand was there, during the rut, in 2003. It had to have be a 150-160 class 10 pointer. The gun area is really not used by anybody during bow season. On any give day you can go there and have high odds of being the only one there.
The bottom line is that this is a great place to hunt, and you can get your deer if you put in the effort. The best hunting spots are equi-distant between the two parking lots - be prepared to walk, and have a cart available to remove a large deer.
It's little used in late ML season, and that's one of my favorite times to hunt. I sometimes have all 2000 acres to myself.
