Hey Dick, did you ever get your outboard straightened out? My 25HP Merc pulled it's stunt again Sunday afternoon and left me with a 3 mile paddle session to get back to the ramp. The filter is filling with fuel fine but it ain't gettin thru the carb.

I exhausted my resources and finally took it to a shop. Hopefully I'll get it back tomorrow. It just wouldn't pump enough fuel at high speed. The compression was good, the reeds were in excellent shape plus I cleaned them, I'd put in a new fuel pump kit and added a new hose from the tank. I pulled the fuel line off the carb and cranked the engine. Fuel should have come from the pump but it didn't.
The motor is an '82. I hope it doesn't cost more than it's worth. There's only 1 shop in town and he can charge what he wants.
Is your motor a 2 stroke? If so, it could be the reed valves not closing completely. That will reduce or even eliminate the vacuum which pulls the fuel through the carb. If the motor is badly carboned, chunks of crud could be wedging under the reeds so they don't close.

yeah, it's a 2 stroke. I don't think it's the reedvalves, more likely the float or needlevalve sticking again. What gets me is it runs like a scalded cat and then I can't get it started again. Pour a little fuel down the throat and it starts and runs till that fuel is gone. My friend, the expert, thinks it's looney that I would consider fixing it myself yet he's too busy working on really big boats to look at it.

Ya all are cheap, LOL. I had an old 58 merk that finily bit the dust. The shop wanted more to fix it than I was willing to shell out.

well there's too much water around here not to have running boats and motors. I've got to either fix this one or buy another motor.

I got mine back today. They ran it in a tank for me in the shop and it sounds sweet. I'll get it out Saturday for a run. It's a good thing I took it in. It has electronic ignition with a dual coil and one was going bad. I'd never have figured that one out. Also, the fuel pump was bad. I'd put a kit in it but a non-replacable part was bad so my kit was a wash. The bill was $240 so it could have been worse.

I gotta fix mine. I tore the bass up Sunday afternoon, giving my boy lessons on fishing the black plastic worm, and I could have been back in em this afternoon.

I talked to my friend about my motor problems and he said I probably have a leak in the choke line causing it to suck air instead of fuel.
I'm suppose to disconnect that line and seal it off and see how it runs.

? ? What's a choke line? Every boat motor that I've ever messed with (which isn't many) has a simple butterfly valve for a choke.
I got mine on the water but now the water pump has failed. I put a new impeller in it this spring but apparently something else in the pump has gone out. I bought a rebuild kit this morning so I can put it in today. At least it's only a 30 min job.

yeah, anyway he said he'd fix it so I'm going to hold him to the task. ;D He's a whiz on outboards but he sure can talk some yank. I've pulled that carb and took it down so many times I can do it in the dark but I can't seem to fix it.

@#$%^&* If it isn't one thing, it's another. The water pump refuses to work. I put in a whole new pump, replaced the thermostat, cleaned the intake screen, and backflushed the system. It still won't pick up water. It's got me baffled. These things just aren't that complicated but I'm missing something. I would REALLY hate to have to take it to a shop for this.

ain't boat motors fun? What year and model motor do you have? I'll probably see Bill tomorrow and I'll try and get something helpful from him. He owes me big time now so perhaps he'll be of help.
