I've got something else to check, anyway. I dropped by the boat shop and talked to the mechanic. He was scratching his head when the owner's wife wandered over. I told her what was going on and she said they had one several years ago that they messed with for 6 mo. before an Evinrude techy figured it out. It was a warped head. They didn't know why a leaky head would affect the water pump, but apparently it does. It must break the vacuum somewhere. Anyway, I'm going to pull it off and check it. A new head gasket is only $14. If it's warped less than .007", I can grind it down. If it's more than that, a new one costs $175. Dang, if I had to buy this engine as separate parts, it would cost $10,000.

I don't know but that sounds like a good price on a new head. Hopefully that ain't the problem anyway.
I did see Bill this morning as I drove past his place but he was obviously busy and I had a crew of men in the truck to get to the job. When I went by there several times later in the day, he was gone. Maybe tomorrow.
Has HA been down today? I couldn't get in just now.

GOT IT!! It was a blown head gasket. If you can figure out how that would affect the water pump, please let me know. All I know is that there was a crack in the fiber part of the gasket that let water through. I replaced it and it's pumping like a garden hose. The head was well within the specs, less than .003" out of flat. I just smoothed the surface with sandpaper and put it together.
HA has been down all day. Maybe one of the liberals blew out the server with a pro-Hilary comment.
