We are looking into using search engines to help the site grow some so I've invited a couple of smart cookies to post here and help us out if they will.

I don't know as much about promoting a board which is on someone elses site. You are part of proboards21.com rather than having your own site. Most of the advice you get about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) assumes you own your own site.
There seems to be lots of crap out there about SEO and it's sometimes hard to distinguish what's good and what's not.
Brad Callen who sells SEO Elite gives out a lot of free advice on SEO in order to promote his software which automates the link building process. Sign up for his newsletter and courses. Just realizes it is all slanted toward buying his product which I wouldn't recommend for you even though I have it and like it.
WebPosition Gold also should have some info as well as OptiLink.
I am under the impression that submitting to search engines is not usually necessary despite all the hype about it and I'm not sure what you would submit anyway. Search engines can find you through following links from other indexed sites.
Study the SEO Elite material about HOW to link and what anchor text etc means. Then ask any of your members with sites to link to your board and provide them the HTML they need so that you control the anchor text and it makes it very easy for them to link. Make sure and vary the anchor text some as having every single one of your links witht he same text dosen't look natural to the search engines. Got to go, I'll try to add to this later.
