I have a problem. My dad gave me his 30-06 2 years ago. I noticed last year that it had a little surface rust on the back side of the reciever. I oiled it down real good so it hadnt gotten any worst , but is there any way i can remove all the rust with out redoing the whole thing? Its not that bad but I want to get rid of it before it gets worst. Thanks in advance for any help

Depends on how much rust and pitting as to what to do. You'll never get it to like new but if you keep rubbing it with an oily cloth the rust can be removed. If it's too bad for that, fine steel wool or emery cloth but with those the blue will come off too. I've seen some hunting type guns gone over with steel wool that looked fairly good.

know someone else can answer this better than i. my guess is solvent , a soft rag and plenty of patience to get rid of it. problem is in the process i'm guessing the blueing is shot (reason it rusted in the first place). if you do get it all off, when you open the case next fall it will be back. i think the only way may be to reblue at least the receiver once its clean. if you are going to reblue , i'm guessing some rust remover would make it go faster. i repeat that i dont know squat about this process, i kind of call my slight rust (mostly from uncleaned blood) character rust . crossposted with above post
