Just want to get a feel for something here. I've been given the responsibility of trapping 10,000 plus acres in the low country next January and February. While I could effectively run most of it I dont think I have the gear or the time to trap it hard enough to really make an impact on the predators. They are over run with bobcat coyotes and greay foxes. Ther is also an abundance of armadillo and possums.
What Im thinking about doing is having a trapping get together ,hosting anyone that wants to come at the lodge and basically speaking try and catch the hell out of some of these predators on our lands.
I would be willing to split the proceeds of the sale of any canines with whomever catches . Ill handle the transport and sale , all you'll have to provide is a legal liscense and liscense number for the fox pen records. Yotes which are overrun down there bring 125-150 a piece , reds bring 100 and greys bring 25 . Bobcats pelt out for around 80 and are abunadant as well. Basically what im saying is a four day run with two dozen traps could easilly produce enough catches to pay for your liscense and the trip .
Any of y'all be interested in putting it together? Im thinking early jan before the breeding season starts and the fox get hard to catch.

would be fun if my financial situation can stand it. lol. One of my best friends may be interested. He has caught more game than all of us put together probably times 10 or more. I mean this guy is the only true outdoorsman left in these parts. Makes his living entirely off the land, even today, and buys a new truck regularly. I think you'll find this guy most interesting ... and he will definately thin the predators in unbelievable numbers if he will go. Diabetis has took a toll on him from what he once was.

Bowman , I would hope that you would be there ! You know how the trapping deal goes weather, ect can mess up a sure thing but the current situation on these lands says it would take some awfully poor weather to do poorly. I think wed be hunting fox storage after the first night .
I can get us in the lodge for nothing
Ill check on the trapping lioscense but if my memory serves me right its 100 bucks.
We'll make our own meals or hire the lodge cook and buy groceires
I have 27 tracts of land to trap so splitting it up amongst a half dozen of us is no problem.
We have several areas that need beaver and otter trapping sone as well.
A good job done trapping for the lodge could easilly net us some favors next turkey season !

I don't know alot about trapping but I will help out if I can. I've seen the predator sign on some of the property John is talking about and I think it will be worth the trip.

well see as the time gets closer. My market is so saturated, the bottom could fall out at any time. I'm really wary about it (making a living) right now.

Land holdings have gone way up I think just in land I have to run this year I am up to 16000 + acres. No way I can trap it all and some of it is management trapping I am contracted to do so I have to do that first. If you might be interested in a trapping vacation shoot me an email. I'm hoping otters go well this year we've got a bumper crop ready to be stretched.

Thats kind of a million dollar question. Depends on how much time you can take and how much money you want to invest. I would hate to see you go to the expense of a non res trap liscense and the trip down and show up with a half dozen traps. I would think 24 -36 sets would keep you pretty well busy .
Three main interests in the low country coyote, bobcat, and grey fox. All three will get caught quite nicely in victor 1 1/2's or bridger number 2's. Two dozen softies and a dozen bridgers would probably be more than enough. I have plenty of beaver/otter trapping gear you can set.
For the most part traps, stakes, and bait is what you'd need. For the live catch deal you need a catch stick, a dog carrier and a little nuts!LOL Big male bobcats are kinda intimidating in a trap. Worst part they always seem to be caught by one little toe. Doesn't do much to convince your mind he aint going to pull out and climb your chest. Since your looking for the trophy room I would suggest a 22 rifle.
Shoot me an email and we can set it up. The land hasnt been trapped in years and the pickings should be pretty good.

I havent set any dates as of yet. Matter of fact I havent even set a trap yet I have been trying to make up for a week off at the office. My schedule is pretty flexible but I will have to talk to the lodge owner to make sure we arent conflicting with anything he has going on. In other words we can probably work most dates out.The best trrapping is going to be before the second week of Feb after that it always seems to get tough.

Picked up my liscense yesterday and set some traps. Bad news for you out of state guys is the non res fee is 200 bucks . OUCH. Our resident liscenses went from 10 dollars last year to 25 this year. OUCH again.

nother update I forgot to mention far as the sale of live animals go its going to get tough. Reading this years regulations you cant transfer a fox to me to sell for you unless I get a buyers permit which is quite steep .You have to sell it to a liscensed buyer which in itself aint a problem but it means that I will either have to make arrangements for a buyer to come and pick them up or one day out of every three will be wasted driving to my area of the state to sell them. Basically speaking thats going to get to be a logistical nightmare storing and transporting a bunch of live fox and yotes. Its been my experience that more than two days in a storage container and many of the fox will succumb to stress in the following few days. I get backcharged for that and was planning on avoiding that by making a run daily to offload everyones catches at the halfway mark. That by itself in gas will be 20-30 bucks a crack.
If we did this it would probably only make sense if you understood from the rip that more than likely you would be pelting what you caught and the opportunity to pay for your trip is probably pretty slim. Between the liscenses travel its probably going to get a bit pricey before its over for you non res guys.
