We have alot of nutria on the farm in Currituck and I would like to do something about them. They are eating crops, digging holes in the bridges and the ditches. What kind of traps would you use to catch them and how do you catch them?

difficult to deal with nutria specificly when trapping because traps are so non selective with water sets.
I think a large catfish pot baited with ears of corn may work well but you should consult with the warden if you try anything outside trapping season.
Around here we shoot em. Trouble for most of us is we simply don't have time to sit around waiting for em to show up.

I am new to this forum. ncbowman suggested that I give it a look and I thought that I would post a reply here. The best bait that I have used for nutria is ripe bananas, the black stage. I have caught many using this bait.
And if those traps can be bought at near that price it is a steal.

Welcome to the site Tx. BANANNAS??? All my years of trapping I never thought of that. I bet muskrats would go for em too.

Many years ago, when I was in high school .some farmers hired me to kill nutrias. One of them owned a grocery store and would dump old produce near his small lake for the cattle and other creatures to eat. One afternoon I saw two nutrias come to the pile and noted that it was the bananas they were after. I probably never thought to try them if I hadn’t seen that.
Don’t know about muskrats we never had enough to be worth the time trapping.
