i kept hearing something outside and i looked out in my back yard. low and behold it was a cock pheasant ;D. i've only seen a few around in the 20 some years i have been here, but none near the house. i figured most had gotten away from some release hunters. i hope there is a female around so they can breed . it would be nice to have pheasants right by the house.

We had many pheasants back home in WA. They are what I cut my teeth on as far as hunting goes. I used to be a pretty good wing shooter, (although there is a big difference between a pheasant and a dove LOL) but I haven't done that in a LONG time. Anyway, when I moved to Indiana I expected to have pheasants, and quail running around all over the place. I mean it seems like perfect habitat, but I've never seen a pheasant here in SE Indiana, and only a handful of quail. The only pheasant hunting around here is pen raised put and take hunting.

When I was 16 and growing up we had alot of pheasants around our area. It wasn't uncommon to go out and kick up or just see a dozen or more in one outing, that was 25 years ago. Damn, 25 years already??? Where does time go. This went on for about 5 years or so but the numbers started to dwindle. After 5 years it was hard pressed to even see a pheasant. They have been raising them and turning alot loose on public hunting lands and on bird clubs around the county for the last 7 years or so and their finally starting to make a comeback. I've been seeing alot more of them.

I grew up cutting my teeth on ruffed grouse or "mountain chickens" we called them.back in the 70"s it was never a problem getting onto birds back in WV. I spent many a day walking the hills in search of those birds. after awhile you just knew where they were gonna be come a good snow. I moved down here to Md and find they had no thunder chickens, just quail and pigeons(doves). in 23 years here i have only seen a handful of pheasants, mostly during my dog training days. i'm convinced every one i have seen has been an escape from a preserve or one that got away during a dog field trial. i was kinda shocked to see one in my yard. i havent sen it since not that i expected to, i would love to see them make a comeback here. i would also love to let a few grouse loose to see if they could maybe get by the fox and feral cats.
