Checked the local sawtooths friday and noticed 2 of the gobblers are releasing motherloads. Went back today and still a bunch in the tree though. I got to walkin around and lookin, payin attention to the timing of the drop. Near as I can figure there are at least four different varieties of sawtooths growing around town. I'm pondering how I can lay em out on my property for maximum hunting pleasure in the future taking into serious consideration the pine plantations of various ages on three sides of my property. I really do own the honeyhole. Anyway, I'm also becoming much more variety attentive in my labeling and planting. There is quite a difference as we will see here and of the sawtooths I already have growing on my property, I don't know which is which. Guess I'll know when I see acorns. One of my favorites is what I call a Jumbo. These bear bushels of large acorns when mature. I noticed one had already released within the past week. I need to go check the others I know of and get them up before the lawnmowers come thru. Jumbos make good yard trees because it only takes 20-30 minutes to grub five gallons. ;D ok, it's late and I got a full week ahead. More later. to recap, the Jumbo is slightly ahead of the gobblers which are beginning to fall now, Oct 1st. Most of the trees are still holding.

Here's an interesting type. I call these 'full cup'. Large acorns, almost as big as Jumbos, but nearly fully enclosed and a little later to release.

You are so lucky That is a bucketful of some really nice ones, look bigger than last years. My 3 are either gobblers or the Jumbo's because the seeds were the huge ones . I'm not sure what kind the one you gave me is but it's still doing ok, but growing slow. I got about 2 feet out of my best one this year from an acorn, it should jump pretty good next year I figure. Barb keeps saying she has seen some around , she remembers seeing them because of the caps but can't remember where They are starting to sell on ebay too , you may want to take a look. they are selling 15 lb lots for like $1 a pound ;D
