Opening morning Sept 25th.
Morning was warm 67f. Got to property at 6am. was in stand at 6:45, as the sun was just coming up.
at 7:15 a does came in behind me with a button buck. Hate to admit it, but made a couple of mistakes.
1st mistake. Checking previous nights football scores on my I phone.
Heard some thing behind me, and blew it off as a squirrel, as they were running around every where. But turned out to be a doe, and her button buck.Momma busted me, but didn't spook. Bucky made his way under my stand never knowing I was there. Momma soon relaxed and fed to my left. But being I had my phone, and not my bow in hand. I had to put it way, take off my glasses, and grab my bow.
I did manage to do this with out alarming them. Momma made her way into a shooting lane. I didn't feel that I could have stood up for the shot,(2nd mistake) so I drew, and placed pin behind her shoulder. I let the arrow fly. I could see my arrow hit, and appeared to be a bit high.
With the bino's I could see blood covering my fletchings, and a blood trail.
At this point, I wasn't sure of the hit, so I text'd my buddy Steve, who was hunting the opposite side of the property to tell of my situation.
As I wasn't sure of the hit I decided to just stay in the stand. As I was waiting 2 bucks came into my set up, both grunting softly. I could see them very clearly, and knew they were to small for me to take. Maybe 2 1/2 yr olds. 1,10pt, 1, 6. the 6 had 5pts on his left, and 1 massive spike on his right. I took lots of pix, as the raked trees, and made scrapes. They hung out for early an hour, sometimes sparing.
When Steve finally came to help, they disappeared in the same direction as the doe.
Steve and I trailed the doe most of the morning, but the blood got very sparse after about 100yrd.
We never found her.I went back this morning, and search, but no sign. I can only hope that the shot passed just under the spine, but above the lungs.
So season count begins with 1 doe, 3 bucks.
