perhaps this will make you feel better. After the hurricane I had numerous crews doing work. One of them I fired because they were crackheads. Well, one of the coordinators I had in place put that crew to work, unbeknownst to me, and pirated a few jobs.(did some jobs but didn't put them on the books) One of the jobs (a metal roof) failed and since it was my name at the head of the contract, I was responsible. Last week I removed the failed roof and put a new one on ... out of my own pocket. cost? $10,800

Oh yeah? Today one of my Surgeons dropped the ball and guess who's going to have to clean up this mess? Yeah that would be me. And on a procedure that I don't have training on and didn't want to get into. I've spent the whole fricken day setting things up and started the process of getting educated so I can fix this. It's going to cost me thousands and lots of time. But his cost? About a hundred thousand dollars a year in referrals. What a dickhead. And you know what? It's in every profession. I'm still fuming. By the same token a Senior surgeon, who makes 5 times what that hack makes, spent an hour with me on the phone and walked me through the entire process and even offered to ship me the tools that I would need. You go to look for the good in this life otherwise you'll just get overwhelmed with the schit.

10k that's a big hit in any line of work. Hopefully, keeping your name in good standing in the area will bring more than enough work to make the loss up.
Buckfever, what kind of work do you do?

sounds like an expensive week all the way around wow. so you went ahead and changed out that roof ? that had to hurt . probably best in the long run but its gonna take a few jobs to get that back. 3600 and a bow string aint nothing to sneeze at either. surgeon

well, you never really get back lost money but a good name is worth a lot. Interesting how things go though. Since I bit the bullet I've landed a couple of the most profitable jobs I've ever had and got another one on the line.

It was an implant case, I practise Dentistry. About 40% of what I do are few advanced procedures. It's no big deal if you have the training, but you have to clearly carve out your niches.
I used to do finishing carpentry. What happened would be like if I took a contract to do the finishing carpentry on some new construction and jobbed out the Oak Staircase because I didn't want to handle the curved rail and then the guy does everything but the curved rail and then says I thought you were going to do that. And then lies about the whole deal to cover up that he don't know how to do it.
I spent the better part of yesterday getting educated and made contact with the implant rep today to get the specialized training for the piece that I had been jobbing out.
The thing that was infuriating, was that I could not understand why he was speaking to me in such smug condescending tones and blowing me off like that. What I have come to learn is that not only did he not know how to do the procedure, a portion of what he did do, is predicated on knowledge specific to that procedure. And that would be gross negligence.
The silver lining in this is that I'm going to get the training on another specialized procedure, but more importantly, I'm going to step up and the patient is going to get taken care of.
It doesn't surprise me at all nc would step up and make it right on that roof. We often talk about like minded folks sharing a passion regarding the hunting ethic. But really we have it a little backwards. It is the common strength of character, which finds similar expression within the hunting ethic that is IMO what we are really observing.
