Hunting elk can take you a long ways from the road and the hungries can get a hearty grip on the unprepared. Over the years, I've developed this tasty, full-blown dinner that packs easily and is very nutritious.
Cheese: I prefer mild cheddar or maybe medium. Sharp tastes good but it's too brittle and crumbles in the pack. Cut 1/4" strips from a block. If they're green, you'd do well to trim them a bit. How many you cut depends on how hungry you anticipate being before the day's end.
US government approved pork and beef blended meat product (the stuff that got our boys through 2 world wars): Slice 1/2" strips, 1 for each 2 slices of cheese.
You also need a beer can and a rose blossum.
Lay a cheese slice on the table and delicately lay a slice of meat product on top of it. Garnish that with a 2d slice of cheese. Being careful to not let the pile fall over, insert it in a baggie and seal. Repeat with the rest of the strips. This will go in the bottom of your pack, under the canteen. Carefully pack the rose and beer can where they're accessable on short notice.
When hunger strikes, find a sharp rock to sit on, open your pack, and extract the above items. Empty the beer can (unless you were foolish enough to bring an empty one), insert the rose in the opening (stem first), and set next to your pack for atmosphere. It will also take your mind off the main course. If you didn't bring a cloth napkin, an extra sock will do to keep the drippings from your $125 wool shirt. Unwrap the casserole and spread it out on your lap. Now you will appreciate the flexible mild cheddar as sharp would be in crumbs. Take in the aroma, and enjoy.
This meal is also useful for baiting bears. As you eat, just listen for gagging sounds coming from downwind.
