Sometimes working so much in order to even put a trip together, once I reach the hunting area it takes me a bit to shake the feeling that I must rush to make some sort of deadline. Sometimes it takes me a couple of days to get into my hardcore bowhunter mode, sometimes just a couple of hours. Past few years I've been more or less lounging and resting for a day or two before I really get after it. I don't know if it's cause I'm getting older or because I exhaust myself just gettin there. ;D How do you make with the change to a fulltime bowhunter and how long does it take you usually?

This year I seem to have better focus than in recent years, probably because I have such limited time in the field. It's actually how my hunting partner does it every year. Hunt little if at all in October and keep the edge. Also by hunting very little, I've had the opportunity to be very meticulous in my preparations. Everything is square and ready and I'm just marking time till showtime.
I think it's how I'll hunt going forward.

I often feel the need to get right at hunting once I get somewhere. I can ussually change modes rather easily . It is nice to take your time getting started but with time being limited, you also got to make the best of the time one has . I like to get in the woods often just before going on a trip or getting ready for the big hunt . I tend to make early mistakes nearly every year before getting everything together. sometimes it doesn't matter how much time you spend getting prepped at home , things don't go quite that way in the field. the more i get out before , especially if i hadn't hunted much that year the better. mistakes will be made and i want them to be made when it doesn't matter as much . going into a big hunt with cold hunting skills is a recipe for tag soup imo. even 3 or 4 days of a few hours hunt just before going will sharpen your skills and get the mind prepped for the time when it really counts

I'm haing this delimma right now. I talked to my boss about feeling like I couldn't go on this Ohio trip due to work pressures, and he said if I had scheduled it (I have) then I should go, and others will cover. I wish it was really that simple, but it gave me a little relief. Work pressures before and after a hunting trip (or any vacation) make it so difficult to relax and feel good about the vacation.
I'm still on the fence. If I go it will be 4-12 Nov or 5-12 Nov.

Going on the 04 trip cost me 30to40k gross in lost jobs....
but I actually passed on around 30 bucks that trip, one of the best trips I've made. I've never really missed the 40k. ;D

I'm in the middle of building out my office and with my wife's promotion and her rebuilding her team, she needed to do 9 field travels here in the last quarter, in addition to the usual travel associated with her job. I have never been so limited in my ability to get out there as I am this year. I was always able to structure my schedule and fit in plenty of hunting with no impact to my work or family life. Unfortunately those days are largely over and I think the concentrated all out effort is going to have to be the deal. Fact is we're not kids anymore(except for Todd) and those 10 days out of the year, we don't get those back and how many more of those do we have? Particularly when we still have the physical abilities to get out there and really grind it out.
No doubt at the end of the day, when we reflect back, we might not regret limiting our hunting opportunities some to fulfill our responsibilities, but to have given up the prime time, there is no way that will have been worth it.

Twanger I was thinking about you today. Last week I actually took a half day of hunting away from my 9 day opportunity because I was feeling guilty about work. Yesterday after I hung stands I realized this is it. Either I get it done during those nine days or I won't get it done this year. I struggled with it. I talked to my wife and to my hunting partner and I really felt like I wasn't pulling my weight regarding this hunt like my partner was.
Anyway I came up with a creative solution so that I gave my staff off some time during my hunt which they really appreciated, took next friday completely off and added a half day to the following week.
My buddy said to me, you know what, I waited a whole year for this hunt and I've worked my ass off, haven't tqaken a day off in 11 weeks to open up this time, like you I gave up most of October for this, this is our time, we deserve this.
I've been walking up at 5:45 ever morning to acclimate myself for the morning hunts.
Come saturday afternoon, it's SHOWTIME!!!
