Went over to the farm in Ohio this afternoon and the deer were out early.I had to run three Does out of the field to get in my stand.I get in my stand and one of the cables that hold the platform to the stand breaks with only one side holding me up....not a good situation!I stay in the stand and tell myself I will have to shoot sitting down...no problem.
I saw four different Bucks with the biggest being an Eight pointer just at the ears.Three of the four were in Bow range and the spike with Ten inch spikes comes right under my tree. The Eight pointer and the Spike had to test each other out but not a full blown fight. The eight pointer ends up taking the Doe off after he makes sure the Spike doesn't have anymore Ideas about taking after the Doe again.
I was holding out for a Doe that had been feeding at about 35 to 40 yards out in the feild from my stand, and wouldn't you know one of the Bucks chases after her and she heads off down in the woods.I had her at 35 yards and decided to wait on her to close the gap to at 30 yards or better and offer me a broadside or quartering away shot, and that is when one of the Bucks chases her away. All the Bucks I saw were in the mood to chase.Their tarsels didn't look fully loaded up and their necks were not swollen but in the next week or so I believe it will hit big.
All of these deer were out in a picked Soybean field. My stand is on the field edge on a Hardwood ridge where i can see the field and into the woods below.I also had 11 Hens come out and come right around my stand.Luckily I was in an Oak tree that still has its leaves on so I was covered up pretty good.At no time did I get busted and I had deer down wind of me and under me.I never did get a mature Buck out in the open.I did have some deer still down in a draw below me but it got too dark to see.
This was one of the best evenings I have ever spent in a tree.Something told me with the night we had before(high winds) that kept the deer from doing what they wanted to do that this evening would be better.I had deer on all sides of me,unfortunately no shot on a Doe ever presented itself.Well maybe next weekend.
All I can say is it is starting to heat up out there in the Deer woods. The scent of a Hot Doe must have been in the air the way those Bucks were running around and I never had any scent out.I guess the big boys are still holding out until the right time.
