Hadn't seen many bucks around here this year.Farm next to us sold, and people been running wild on it (4 wheelers, dirt bikes, hunters sneaking in).
Wife took a nice heavy buck during early ML season, and we saw some fresh scrapes since then.
This a.m.,I jumped a few deer while checking my traps, then heading off to work, there's a NICE 8 point running a doe up my dirt drive. She sees me and stops. He tries to climb aboard! ;D
She starts running in circles. This is at 0530.
I cut out of work early, and up a tree by 3:45.At 4:30 or so,a doe comes in.I see a buck about 80 yards behind her.He comes in,and grunts a few times. She runs back past him-AWAY from me!
HE gives up the pursuit about 75 yards away, and is slowly walking back the way he came.I mouth grunt a few times and he stops.I grunt once ore ,and he turns and SLOWLY comes back.I'm looking at a 20 yard opening he HAS to cross.Nope-he hangs up,then comes through some thick stuff, and pops out within 5 yards, then stops! He KNOWS something ain't right.
I let one fly w/o really thinking.Hit him higher than I wanted to (so close/steep) and see fletching still sticking out.Not good I think,as he wheels around and takes off.I hear the shaft snap, and seconds later watch him cartwheel down by the creek.
Got lucky.Arrow tucked in behind shoulder blade, thru right lung and big plumbing off heart. ;D
Was a young 6 point, but I HAD to shoot. Some years being picky has hurt me in the long run,and I figure to be surrounded by dozers by next season.
