Went to the park with my wife and daughter today around 4 pm. We went to the state park and took a walk. they were making some pretty noisy racket but I pulled out one of Bill Cartwrights Coalfield Calls( www.westernkentuckyoutdoors.com/coalfieldgamecalls/ )and said watch me call a turkey. A few assembly calls and some laughter from the girls later, we heard it. "Gobble Gobble" . I turned with that sort of "I told ya so" grin and had the girls setup by a nearby tree.
I then moved maybe 20 yards behind them and put them between me and the birds that were easily 100 yards or more out. My little girls eyes were beaming.
A few more assembly calls and a few purrs and the toms were sounding very interested as they gobbled one after the other now, I knew they were on their way. I rustled the leaves and let out some random clucks like a feeding hen and i could hear them running our way through the dry leaves.
Then i let er rip just to get a shock gobble as they made their way into a clearing where i had set the girls up at. they would have had a perfect setup, as the birds popped out of the thick about 30 yards from them. they had no camo on and the birds knew something was up but another just had to gobble right at them. no strutting but I think I got what i wanted as the familiar putt-putt of the alarm call was sounded. The birds are starting to heat up and I got the added bonus of having my wife and daughter get to see their first turkey gobble in the wild. of coarse first thing I said was "told ya so" lol great time.
