Well today was the day for the opening of WV Spring Gobbler Season. But as usual it was a flop. After a week or two of extremely nice weather, Saturday night and Sunday it snow and the temperatures were in the low to mid 30's.
Today, it was 35 at 5 AM when we left the house at 5:30 it was 33 degrees. Skys were clear and a full moon was out. We left the house and we just had a skiff of snow on the ground. We got to our hunting club property at a little after 6 AM. At the area we were going in to hunt they had 6 inches of snow on the ground. Young trees were bent over from the weight of the snow on the newly sprouted leaves.
Jerod and I got our packs on and our guns loaded and we were off. We tried a little owl hoot to see if we could locate a bird, nothing! As daylight broke and the birds began to sing and the crows started calling we broke out the crow call. Nothing! We started hen calling, nothing. We walked about 2 miles in about 4 and a half hours. NOTHING!! We did jump three deer, a grouse and on the way out we jumped a hen from here nest. She had a nest close to a 4 wheeler trail. The nest had 6 to 8 eggs in it. We left it alone and went back to the truck. We decided to just call it quits especially since the wind had started to pick up and see if this weekend would be better.
I guess that gobblers won't do any gobbling in the cold snowy weather? I hope we have better luck on Saturday

jplittlebuck,
I am watching the weather and trying to plan time to take off work so I can get in the woods with my son. Was planning, might still do it, to take off tomorrow but they are calling for 90% rain. My son is off school Friday for something they call facilty senate day. So I thought I would skip work. Dang weather!
I have to agree with you about WV. But, you see I was born and raised here. Been to Virginia, NC, SC, OH, AL and MI but just on vacations. When I've been there I always couldn't wait to get back here. As Dorothy says "There's no place like home!"
