The gobbler had sounded off for the past half hour not 100 yds away. It was time to cut the distance. I wasn't able to get much closer to the top of the hill without him spotting me before I set up. In the mean time I heard his girlfriend repeating some of the "throatiest" yelps I'd ever heard from a hens lips and figured the gig was up before it got started.
Not the case!
A few mimmicking yelps and cutts had the hen and tom both fired up as could be, and heading to the top of the hill well within range of the 12 gauge BB launcher.
Here they come. Mrs. Hen yelping all the way walking right down the trail not 10 feet away from me in the most pathetic setup in a stand of immature maple saplings. Remaining motionless and focusing on the crest of the hill awaiting tommy boy, she had walked right past me yelping and clucking all the way off to her nest in a hedgerow where she laid up and dissapeared to the unknowing eye.
Mr gobbler never did crest the top of the hill that my sights patiently awaited and stopped answering her natural calls. When the hen hit the nest I moved to where the initial acctivity began, but to no avail. He was done talking and bagan walking. I assume he had some other horny ladies with him that were willing to go back to his room with him and there was no need to chase after a prude that was done putting out!
Only 2 more days to book this guy a room and turn the lights off for him in the hallway! ;D
