The last time I saw a rope tied to a truck and over the roof like that, there was a guy on the other side with a broken leg. ;D

I hadn't noticed the rope. A repair job on a roof like that can be a nightmare. A few years ago, a farmer down the road had his barn reroofed. It has a roof kind of like this one. They apparently went to a quite a few roofing companies before they found one that would ignore the code and put on a 5th layer of shingles without tearing it off. The rafters were bent and groaning from the weight. They apparently couldn't find long enough nails to get through all the layers of shingles and within a year, it started to blow off.

I didn't notice the rope either. If you look directly over the top of the hood of the truck you will see some rigged up supports that the owner put up. There are more behind the truck as well. IMO the darn thing is a wreck and an accident waiting to happen. Apparently this place is for sale though, (it has a house about 50 feet from it and 2-3 other small out buildings) but the barn is on some sort of historical list somewhere so the owner wants a small fortune (the rumor when I was there said the owner wants a cool 500K) for a barn that is near its end and a house that one could probably get for 50-60K.

Old barns are going at a premium. Some people with a lot more money than me like to dismantle them, move them to a ritzy resort town, and convert them into houses.

well that barn looks to be in very good shape to me based on the pic. All the rafter tails and boards on the rake overhang look good and it probably just needs a ~$30k roof. The histerical sites have great appeal to some as there are benefits that go waaay over most of our heads. They are a way to sack a large amount of money into a property with tax advantages in a proper portfolio. So much the better if it can be used as a business such as a bed and breakfast. Usually the buyers/owners of these type properties can and will afford whatever they want but they seldom want anything near standard first class, always something special. ------ Dick, at $60 a ton landfill fee; How much would you figure 5 layers would run on a barn the size of the one in the pic?

Our landfill fees run closer to $20/ton but even at that, it's the price of new pickup. I don't blame the guy for not wanting to tear if off, but when it collapses from the weight, he'll have to pay it anyway.
