No posts at all for big game? I guess I'll jump in with a photo of my 6x6 elk from last fall. Not particularly big but a whole lot of fun. Dick

Hello Dick. Well I would have to say that is a nice looking elk. Especially if it was your first one, don't know if it is or not. But if it was my first one I would be tickeled to death with it. Nice looking rifle also. I think I have a post on here here somewhere that shows my 5 point whitetail I took and you would almost think I had your gun. Looks almost like the same setup. Well I can't remember where it is so I home Rick doesn't mind me putting it here with your impressive elk. Again, I apologize for adding my picture. The rifle I have is a Remington Model 700 in 30-06.

re, Dick, well thatt's bigger than anything I've ever killed. ;D If he taste anything like the sika deer I ate up at Dave's, all I can say is yum yum. I've eaten elk before but always at cookouts where all kinds of food was abundant and when it's all good, it's tuff to seperate. The packin em out would get to me. If I couldn't use my cart I think I'd be trailering a mule.

Ncboman you got that right, but here in WV we are required to wear 400 sq. inches of blaze orange. Well, I didn't really want to stick out so I went with the blaze camo. As you can tell, everything else I got on is camo...Advantage Timber! I guess I could go with just a vest, but then I would be tempted to take it off after I got to my spot.

No, it's not my first elk but they never lose their thrill. It's the best photo I've got of one, though. I spent a lot of time setting up for the photo, then used photoshop to get rid of a lot of blood. The original was too red to hang on the wall. The rifle is a Savage 300 WSM that I bought last year. Sweet shooting gun! This is it's first hamburger. The scope is a Bushnell Elite 3200. It's not a fancy, high dollar setup but I don't do this for pretty. I want a shooter and this is it. Dick

I've never eaten bear, caribou, or whitetail. Do they all taste like chicken?
I've put in quite a bit of time this last year practicing photography. I have a lot to learn yet, but my shots are getting better. This elk photo is one of about a dozen that we took, some with flash some without. We dragged it down a hill for a better angle, twisted & turned it, and even combed it's hair with a piece of sagebrush. I normally wear glasses but mine are the darkening kind. They get almost black on a cloudy, snowy day so it looked much better without them. A little effort can make a memorable photo, much better than a bloody corpse between the empty beer cans on a pickup tailgate.
NC, packing elk is hard at best, but there are tricks to cut down the work. I don't gut them. I just bone them out, taking the meat off the bones as I go. I skinned & boned this one in 3 hrs by myself after I sent my partner to try to find another one. I skidded the quarters down to the trail 2 at a time. Then a miracle happened. A guy with 2 horses came by who asked to 'borrow' my elk. He had 2 colts that had never packed and he wanted to find out what they'd do. I didn't have to think on it for more than 1.5 seconds before I said 'ok'. I was in a spot where there was plenty of room for a rodeo if one happened but the horses handled it very well. We loaded up and had the meat back to camp in 30 min.

Nice elk. I haven't gone after one yet but I have it on my "things to do list." I'll make sure I call you before I do.
