The Chesapeake Bay of today is actually the prehistoric Susquehanna River valley, gouged out by the last Ice Age glaciers, and flooded by rising ocean waters of the Atlantic. The Bay drains fresh water from over 64,000 sq miles and six primary watersheds, and mixes with the salty ocean water in the arms of the tidal tributaries and the Main Basin.
